'Will'
100cm x 150cm
Acrylic on canvas
£2875
This painting is the first in a three-part series inspired by German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, whose work delved into the nature of suffering, desire, and the redemptive power of art. In The World as Will and Representation, Schopenhauer argued that all of reality is driven by the Will - a blind, unconscious force that fuels both natural phenomena and human longing. Life, he believed, is marked by an endless cycle of craving and dissatisfaction. Yet through art, music, and contemplation, he saw the possibility of momentary escape - a suspension of desire in which we become detached observers, immersed in beauty and freed, however briefly, from the tyranny of the Will.

This painting explores that inner force - the Will - through a dynamic interplay of tension and release. Deep indigos and turquoises create a brooding, introspective space, while flashes of light suggest fleeting hope or transcendence. The work draws the viewer in, mirroring our own urge to seek meaning in a world that resists clear understanding. Yet the act of painting itself offers a form of liberation: a surrender to instinct and intuition, echoing Schopenhauer’s belief that true art emerges not from reason, but from a deeper, unconscious realm.

'Aesthetics'
100cm x 150cm
Acrylic on canvas
£2875
In contrast to the unrest of the first painting, this second work embodies serenity and transcendence. Inspired by Schopenhauer’s belief in the calming power of beauty, the artist paints in a meditative state, using soft blues and gentle luminosity to evoke water, reflection, and stillness. The composition draws viewers into a moment of pure contemplation, where desire momentarily falls away. It doesn’t provoke but soothes, offering a visual experience that echoes Schopenhauer’s vision of aesthetic release - a space where form exists for its own sake and the mind is freed from the burdens of wanting.

'The Charming'
100cm x 150cm
Acrylic on canvas
£2875
The third and final painting in this series explores Schopenhauer’s idea of charm - the seductive power of beauty and its potential to elevate desire into aesthetic experience. While the first two works represent the struggle with, and momentary escape from, the Will, this piece embraces its duality. Warmer tones and organic shapes evoke the human form, reflecting Schopenhauer’s belief that erotic allure can lead to deeper contemplation when transformed through art. The painting invites the viewer into an immediate, sensory encounter - one that is both captivating and contemplative - suggesting that even within desire lies the possibility of transcendence. As with the rest of the series, the artist paints instinctively, turning the creative act itself into a philosophical inquiry, offering a brief but powerful respite from the cycle of craving that defines our existence.
